The type of person that makes it in this industry has the ability to be a self starter, a will to be successful, the patience to build an organization and most of all the people skills necessary to communicate.

In its simplest form, network marketing is an individual who markets a product or service in order to gain a network of distributors and customers. As simple as it sounds, most who are in the industry will tell you it is difficult to to build. This is because network marketing consists of lead generation, follow up, and the coaching of others in an organization to duplicate your efforts.

Finding qualified leads for a beginner can be an exhausting task but with perseverance, and proper training, leads will be generated.

The industry has transformed since the inception of the internet. Previously network marketing only consisted of face to face interactions and the uncomfortable task of begging family and friends to join you. Today you can use the internet to develop more qualified leads.

Using the internet allows for automation of lead development and a much larger viewing audience for your presentation. It also replaces the need for a distributor to use cold calling tactics, which are hardly if ever effective. One can still be successful prospecting without the internet but they will find the amount of leads will be significantly less.

So, the first part of doing network marketing is lead generation, which for beginners can be a daunting task. Second to lead generation is follow up. This is usually done with an auto-responder email or an email from you as soon as possible. Follow up is also where you need your people skills. You do not need to be a salesman because if the prospect does not understand why this industry is so great and they end up being persuaded into the industry, they will most likely never be an active distributor. Many good companies will provide you with a phone script that you can follow until you feel comfortable enough to work without it.

Thirdly, we will assume you have successfully signed up a new distributor. It will be your task to help them achieve success because their level of success will directly impact your income. You must be able to teach your distributors to do what your doing and to develop an organization of their own.

You must see the big picture... being a successful network marketer does not happen overnight. It can take a year or more to even see a significant income and much longer to achieve what you hear from all those ads on the internet... "6 figure income in 1 month, let me show you how!" When you see ads guaranteeing immediate success consider it a red flag because companies promising unattainable instant results are what gives network marketing a bad image.

On paper it seems simple, but it is truly a test of endurance and if you have the patience and tenacity to actively build an organization you can achieve all that the industry can offer.
